Foods to Manage Arthritis Pain

Making changes in the diet has a positive impact on reducing arthritis flare-ups and the severity of the symptoms. It may involve getting rid of the inflammatory foods from the diet, such as sugar and saturated fats. It could also mean eliminating foods rich in purines. The following are some foods to avoid for arthritis pain. 

Foods containing inflammatory fats
There are different types and forms of fat. Excessive consumption of some of them has a damaging impact on the body. They lead to inflammation. Hence, an individual who has arthritis should keep away from foods with the following inflammatory foods: 

  • Saturated fats
    In this category, there is cheese, butter, and meat. Your daily saturated fat consumption should only be 10% or lower of your overall calorie intake.  
  • Omega 6 fatty acids
    It comprises safflower, corn, vegetable oil, and sunflower. Consumption of these fatty acids is not harmful if taken in moderation. However, unfortunately, people have a high intake of these fatty acids, which is unhealthy.  
  • Trans fat
    Trans fat is not suitable for your health as it lowers the level of good cholesterol in the body. As a result, the harmful cholesterol content in the body increases. Consequently, increasing the risk of inflammation of certain body parts. 

Sugar
A prominent study concluded that people with higher consumption of sweetened soda are at higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis. Moreover, consuming high sugar content also puts you at risk of heart diseases. It might also cause chronic diseases, inflammation, and obesity. Many products have added sugar in them, for instance, sauces, cereals, and aerated drinks. So, always check labels before buying.  

Foods with high AGEs
Advanced glycation end products are harmful inflammatory compounds. These tend to assemble in the tissues, as one grows older. Usually, people who have rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes have a higher AGE level. Thus, a reduction in the AGE levels will automatically lower the inflammation—both sugar and fat increase the body’s AGE levels. Moreover, using high-temperature for cooking or certain types of processing methods also heightens AGE content in food. 

Nightshades
Vegetables, which have the solanine compound in them, are known as nightshades. There is no substantial evidence to prove that nightshades lead to flare-ups of symptoms, but there is enough evidence to believe that removing this group of veggies improves the symptoms in a lot of arthritis patients. 

Some nightshade vegetables are: 

  • Bell peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Eggplant
  • Chilli Pepper
  • Potatoes

Purine-rich food
People with gout must consume a low purine diet. Purine comprises substances, which the body converts into uric acid. This acid can accumulate into the bloodstream and trigger an attack of gout.  

Thus, you should avoid the following food items: 

  • Organ meat like liver
  • Red meat
  • Alcohol
  • Seafood
  • Ham, lunch meats, and bacon
