Foods to Avoid for Multiple Sclerosis

Eating nutritious and healthy food is one of the essential techniques for managing and controlling the symptoms of MS. When a person suffers from multiple sclerosis, the immune system works against the body. It attacks the brain and the spinal cord (Central Nervous System). As a result of this, the nerve signals are blocked or interrupted. It can lead to symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), such as vision problems, bowel dysfunction, bladder dysfunction, curtailed movements, numbness, and fatigue.

To improve the quality of life and reduce the gravity or the overall appearance of symptoms, one needs to make a few dietary changes. So, here we have come up with some foods to avoid for multiple sclerosis.

Cereal, white rice, and white bread
In short, keep away from all the refined carbs. Such items have a high degree of processed carbs, which elevate blood sugar levels quickly. They, thus, have a deteriorating impact on the heart. Instead, one could make a healthier switch to pasta, i.e., whole-wheat, barley, brown rice, whole-grain, or brown bread. They are healthy and help overcome constipation, which is a common sign of MS.

Cow milk
An obvious inclusion in this list of foods to avoid for multiple sclerosis is cow’s milk. Firstly, they contain saturated fats. Moreover, certain proteins found in cow’s milk can have negative effects in MS patients. However, not everyone with MS would see a flare-up in symptoms after consuming the milk. So, one can start by eliminating cow milk for a while, and check if it is helping with symptoms. If yes, it is time to say goodbye to it. However, when a person quits cow milk, they have to ensure that the body’s protein, Vitamin D, and calcium requirements are met. So, one can include cashew milk, almond milk, or soy milk in their diet.

Pies, baked cookies, and crackers
Now, everything that has trans-fat should be excluded from the diet, if a person suffers from MS. However, please know that these are not the only three items that contain trans-fat. In addition to the ones listed above, everything that says, “contains partially hydrogenated oil” on the label has to be excluded from the diet. Trans-fat leads to inflammation in the blood vessels, and that could hurt the heart. Packaged foods, like noodles, pasta, and ready-to-eat items, also have a high degree of trans-fat in them.

Coffee
Of course, a cup of coffee or tea in the morning is okay, it is indeed beneficial to an extent, but consuming too much caffeine can only severe the bladder dysfunction, which is a common symptom of MS. Moreover, if one consumes caffeine in the second half of the day, i.e., post 3 pm, it can lead to insomnia. Caffeine also causes hand tremors and muscle spasm in some people. So, do not consume more than two cups in a day.
