Different Types of Anemia
A condition identified by a lack of sufficient hemoglobin in the blood is known as anemia. Hemoglobin is found in the red blood cells which are responsible for carrying oxygen in the blood. There are different types of anemia. While some of them are common, others are rarely diagnosed. Here’s having a look at these different types of anemia.
Iron deficiency anemia
Among the different types of anemia, this is the most common type. Iron deficiency anemia occurs when the body does not have the mineral iron in sufficient quantities. The body needs iron to produce hemoglobin. Therefore, if there is a lack of sufficient iron, the required amount of oxygen is not received by the body. The condition causes several symptoms and they include:
- Fatigue
- Paleness of the skin
- Weakness
- Breathlessness
- Cravings to eat strange things such as dirt, clay, or ice
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Tingling sensation in the legs
- Swelling or soreness in the tongue
- Heartbeats that either irregular or rapid
- Brittleness of the nails
- Headache
Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency anemia
When there isn’t enough vitamin B12 or folate in the body, it leads to the production of unusually large red blood cells that have abnormal functionalities. There are various symptoms caused by this type of anemia and they include:
- Extreme fatigue or tiredness
- Low energy levels in the body
- Paraesthesia – a sensation of needles pricking or tingling
- Soreness and redness of the tongue
- Weakness in the muscles
- Ulcers in the mouth
- Vision problems
- Depression and some other mental problems
- Memory problems
Anemia of chronic disease
This is when there are low levels of red blood cells resulting from an autoimmune disease or any other chronic diseases. Autoimmune diseases refer to a condition when the immune system of the body starts attacking different joints or organs. Chronic illnesses are the conditions that have lasted for more than three months. Anemia of chronic disease is also known as anemia of inflammation or chronic disease.
The symptoms include:
- Fatigue
- Weakness in the body
- Breathlessness
- Dizziness
- Sweating
- Heartbeats that are fast
- Headache
Aplastic anemia
Stem cells present in the bone marrow make blood cells. When a person suffers from aplastic anemia, there is damage caused to the bone marrow and they no longer can produce new blood cells in sufficient quantities. Aplastic anemia can be both acquired and inherited. Acquired aplastic anemia is more common and, in some cases, it is not permanent.
The symptoms of this condition can include:
- Breathlessness
- Pale skin
- Pain in the chest
- Dizziness
- Rapid heart rate or tachycardia
- Cold feet and hands
